Έφυγε ο θεατρικός συγγραφέας Γουίλιαμ Γκίμπσον

Ο Αμερικανο-καναδός συγγραφέας Γουίλιαμ Γκίμπσον [William Gibson] πέθανε στα 94 του χρόνια, στη γενέτειρα του, την Μασαχουσέτη, στις 25 Νοεμβρίου. Άφησε πίσω του το έργο «The Miracle Worker», στο οποίο, αφηγείται την ιστορία της κωφάλαλης, τυφλής μαθήτριας, Ελεν Κέλερ [Helen Keller] και τη σχέση της με τη δασκάλα, γκουβερνάντα και νοσοκόμα της, Ανι Σάλιβαν.

Ο Γκίμπσον έγραψε 12 έργα, αν και ήταν το «The Miracle Worker», που τον έκανε γνωστό στο ευρύτερο κοινό αλλά και στους κριτικούς. Το 1960 μάλιστα απέσπασε βραβεία Τόνι για το καλύτερο έργο της χρονιάς, σκηνοθεσίας αλλά και ερμηνείας από την Αν Μπάνκροφτ. Το 1962 η ταινία απέσπασε βραβεία Οσκαρ για την Μπάνκροφτ και την 12χρονη συμπρωταγωνίστρια της, Πάτι Ντιουκ. Ο Γουίλιαμ Γκίμπσον και ο σκηνοθέτης Άρθουρ Πεν, υπήρξαν επίσης υποψήφιοι για βραβείο Οσκαρ.

Το έργο «The Miracle Worker», που ανέβηκε στο Μπρόντγουέι το 1959, δεν ήταν το πρώτο ολοκληρωμένο κείμενο του συγγραφέα. Είχε προηγηθεί, έναν χρόνο πριν, το «Two for the Seesaw», για έναν δικηγόρο που ερωτεύεται μια χορεύτρια. Η παραγωγή χάρισε στην Μπάνκροφτ το πρώτο της Τόνι. William Gibson (Playwright) was born in 1914 in New York City. He has written poetry, fiction and scripts for stage, television and films. His plays include The Miracle Worker (Tony Award, Best Play 1960) which was originally produced for TV’s «Playhouse 90,» Two for the Seesaw (1958), A Cry of Players, Golda’s Balcony (2003), The Butterfingers Angel, Monday After the Miracle, Goodly Creatures and Handy Dandy. He is the author of a novel, The Cobweb, as well as the musical version of Clifford Odets‘ Golden Boy (1964). His several books include The Seesaw Log, A Mass for the Dead – a study of his family – and a volume of poetry entitled Winter Crook. Mr. Gibson’s book, A Season in Heaven, takes a look at metaphysics and the creative process. His latest book is Shakespeare’s Game, a critical study. He was inducted into the Theatre Hall of Fame in 2005. He was married to the psychoanalyst Margaret Brenman-Gibson, whose biography, Clifford Odets, American Playwright, appeared in 1982.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Playwright William Gibson, whose «The Miracle Worker» won awards and thrilled audiences with its hopeful tale of the teaching of deaf and blind Helen Keller, died at age 94 this week in Massachusetts. Gibson died on Tuesday, a representative of the Finnerty & Stevens Funeral Home in Great Barrington said on Friday. The cause of death was not disclosed.

«The Miracle Worker» first appeared on television in 1957 before Gibson adapted it into a play that debuted on Broadway in 1959 with Anne Bancroft portraying Anne Sullivan, who taught Keller how to communicate. Patty Duke played Keller.

The play won three Tony awards, Broadway’s highest honor, for best play, best actress for Bancroft and best director for Arthur Penn. A 1962 film adaptation, again with Penn directing, won Oscars for Bancroft as best actress and Duke as supporting actress, while Penn and Gibson were both nominated.

While «Miracle Worker» was Gibson’s best-known play, he wrote many others including 1958’s «Two for the Seesaw» which was nominated for a best play Tony and made into a movie. Gibson earned another Tony nomination for the musical «Golden Boy» starring Sammy Davis, Jr. The New York native’s 1977 play «Golda,» about Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir, hit a sour note with critics, but a revised version — «Golda’s Balcony» — became popular in 2003.

Gibson also wrote short stories, poems and novels such as 1954’s «The Cobweb» and he published a memoir, «A Mass for the Dead,» in 1968. His wife Margaret Brenman-Gibson, a noted psychologist, teacher, writer and social activist, died in 2004. (Editing by John O’Callaghan)

William Gibson, who wrote the play “The Miracle Worker,” about the relationship between Helen Keller and her teacher, Anne Sullivan, died on Tuesday, his agent, Mary Ann Anderson, said Thursday. He was 94 and lived in Stockbridge, Mass. First written for television and aired in 1957, “The Miracle Worker” was adapted for Broadway in 1959 and won the 1960 Tony Award for best play. Nearly half a century later, it is still performed at regional theaters around the country. Mr. Gibson’s other works include “Two for the Seesaw,” which opened on Broadway in 1958, the book for a musical adaptation of “Golden Boy” by Clifford Odets, “Golda’s Balcony” and “The Monday After the Miracle,” a sequel to “The Miracle Worker” that had a brief run on Broadway in 1982.
