«Sucker Punch». Το καινούργιο έργο του Ρόι Ουίλιαμς είναι χρονολογικά τοποθετημένο στα μέσα της δεκαετίας του ’80, όταν οι φυλετικές εντάσεις είχαν κορυφωθεί σε ανοιχτό πόλεμο ανάμεσα στην αστυνομία και τη μαύρη κοινότητα στο Τότεναμ, στο βόρειο Λονδίνο. Κεντρικοί ήρωες είναι δύο νεαροί μαύροι πυγμάχοι, ο Λέον, που πιστεύει ότι μπορεί άνετα να αφομοιωθεί, και ο Τρόι, που θεωρεί τον φίλο του αφελή και τον αποκαλεί «πόρνη των λευκών». Ο συγγραφέας περιγράφει εύστοχα την εποχή, τις ελπίδες των μαύρων νεαρών που ελπίζουν να βγουν από το γκέτο μέσω της επίδοσής τους στο ποδόσφαιρο και στο μποξ, και που αντιμετωπίζουν τον καλυμμένο ρατσισμό της αγγλικής κοινωνίας. Two former friends step into the ring and face up to who they are. Sucker Punch looks back on what it was like to be young and Black in the 80s and asks if the right battles have been fought, let alone won. Roy Williams’ early work at the Royal Court was supported by Jerwood New Playwrights, in partnership with the Jerwood Charitable Foundation. His previous plays at the theatre include Lift Off and Clubland in the Jerwood Theatre Upstairs and Fallout in the Jerwood Theatre Downstairs, which was later made into a film for Channel 4. Recent credits elsewhere include Category B, part of the Not Black and White season at the Tricycle and Joe Guy for Tiata Fahodzi at Soho Theatre.
